How to Replace the ITSX95C Backlight

The ITSX95C is a common computer screen made by IDTech. It is used in many older Compaq, HP and Acer laptop models. Every LCD screen is equipped with a backlight, which is a tiny fluorescent light bulb. These light bulbs are made to withstand a few thousand hours of use, after which they burn out and need to be replaced. An indication of backlight issues is extreme screen dimness. As the problem continues, the screen becomes so dark that no image can be seen, except by cupping your hands around the screen and putting your face up close to it and looking for a very dim light to turn on. The replacement process is universal for all backlights, but the part purchased must be made specifically for this model.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the laptop, and disconnect all of the cables. Remove the battery from underneath the laptop by sliding the latch over and pulling it out.

    • 2

Open the laptop, and push the screen as far back as it will go. Expect the screen to almost lie flat against the work surface. Remove the rubber stops from the corners of the upper screen assembly with a tiny, precision flat-head screwdriver. Place the stops in a secure area so you can find them again.

    • 3

Unfasten the screws that hold the front screen bezel using a Phillips screwdriver. Place the screws in a small plastic container for safekeeping.

    • 4

Insert the tip of the precision flat-head screwdriver into the seam of the upper plastic bezel and gently pry the front bezel off.

    • 5

Locate the small, thin circuit board (inverter board) that looks like a thin ruler attached under or next to the screen. Untape the inverter board from the back of the plastic case, and disconnect the cable connectors located at either end of the inverter board. Lift it out and away from the computer. This inverter board sends the power to the backlight and screen.

    • 6

Unfasten the screws holding the screen in place. Slowly pull the screen forward out of its bracket from the top edges. Disconnect the ribbon cable connectors located on the back. Lift the screen out of the assembly. Remove the foil tape that surrounds the screen.

    • 7

Insert the precision flat-head screwdriver into the tiny notches on the metal frame that surounds the screen, and pry it off screen.

    • 8

Remove the reflector assembly attached to the screen base with sticky tape. The backlight is located under the reflector. Lift the backlight and observe how the two wires are connected to it.

    • 9

Unsolder the wire connections from the end of the backlight bulb by applying the heat of an electronic soldering iron to the old solder points and gently tugging the wire out. The heat from the soldering iron will loosen the old solder enough to pull the backlight out. Place the new backlight in the appropriate seating position and solder the wires back into place. Reassemble all the parts you disassembled, and turn on the computer. The screen should function normally.
