How to Manually Roll Up an Awning

Save

Awnings are fabric or metal shade coverings you can attach to a building, patio, or even to the side of a recreational vehicle. Awnings come in manual or motorized form, with the manual versions being less expensive. Motorized awnings roll up on their own with the push of a button. Manual rollup awnings require the owner to operate a crank or lever to retract the awning. Manual awnings are usually fabric.

  • Disconnect any arms holding the end of the awning up. These may be stakes in the ground, or arms that connect to the side of the building. You may need to pull the supports out of connectors at the end of the awning, or simply collapse them against the building.

  • Pull the crank out of its housing. Most manual awnings utilize a crank that folds against the side of the RV or building so it is hidden. Unlock the crank, if there is one.

  • Turn the crank to the right, or clockwise, to wind up the awning. Continue turning the crank until the entire awning is rolled.

  • Snap any cover you have into place, or any security straps that will keep the awning rolled up until you are ready to use it again. Return the crank to its usual position.
