How to Know Which Way the Airflow Is When You're Replacing an Air Conditioner Filter
Whether you have a window air conditioner or a whole house unit, you must change the filter at least once a year. The filter catches dust and other impurities to keep the air fresh inside the house. The filter on an air conditioning unit must be installed the correct way for it to do its job properly. Shut off the air conditioner and remove the old filter.

Turn on the air conditioner and place your hand in the location where the filter was and determine which way the air is flowing. Shut off the air conditioner.

Examine the new filter and locate the arrows that show which way the air should flow through the filter.

Install the new filter into the air conditioner with the arrows pointing in the direction that the air flows when the unit is running. Turn on the air conditioner. If the filter gets sucked in, it is installed incorrectly and must be turned around.
