DIY Barometer
A barometer is a scientific instrument that measures changes in pressure. Barometers are frequently used in weather forecasting; for example, when a weather forecaster talks about a "high-pressure system", that measurement was probably taken using a barometer. Making a simple, homemade barometer can be a fun activity for children and adults alike that can also be used to learn about what pressure is and how it works. Building your own do-it-yourself barometer can be accomplished in a few short steps.
Instructions

1
Fill the measuring cup with water and add a few drops of food coloring to the water so it is easier to read.
-
2
Turn the soda bottle upside down and place it into the measuring cup.

-
3
Make sure that the water extends into the neck of the bottle and mark a line on the neck indicating where the water level is.
-
4
Leave the barometer in an environment with a stable environment with no dramatic temperature changes, such a closet. When you check back in a few days, you should see the water level change, which indicates a change in pressure in the surrounding environment. If the water level has risen above the mark, the air pressure has increased.

Tips & Warnings
The bottle should fit snugly into the measuring cup, and the mouth of the bottle should not touch the bottom of the cup. If this is not the case, consider using a different sized measuring cup or bottle.
