How to Add an ActiveX Control to Internet Explorer

Sometimes when browsing with Internet Explorer, you come across a website that prompts a message at the top of the screen stating you need to install an ActiveX control to view the website properly. In order to install an ActiveX control to Explorer, you need to have ActiveX enabled for Explorer. To do this, access Explorer's Internet options.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Internet Explorer, and select the "Tools" option from the top of the page.

    • 2

Choose "Internet Options" from the drop-down menu.

    • 3

Select the "Security" tab from the "Internet Options" window, and click the "Custom Level" button under the "Security level for this zone" section.

    • 4

Scroll through the list of options that appears in the "Security Settings" window until you find the "ActiveX controls and plug-ins" heading.

    • 5

Click either the circle next to "Enable" or "Prompt" for each option under "ActiveX controls and plug-ins." The "Enable" option allows ActiveX controls to install automatically, and the "Prompt" option asks you if you want to install first (thus giving you the option to refuse).

    • 6

Click "OK." You may have to close the current Internet Explorer window and open a new one before the changes take effect.

    • 7

Navigate to the website that is telling you to install ActiveX in order to see the site properly. If a message appears at the top of the screen asking you to add the control, click the message and choose to install the control.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose the "Prompt" option as much as possible so you can refuse to allow an ActiveX control to install if you do not trust the website you are on.
