How to Check if a Domain Name Is Taken

A domain name is the label that defines a particular website, such as "Google.com." Domain names are available for purchase on various sites online. Many domain names already have been purchased, but this might not be obvious from just trying to go to the website. You can check whether a domain name has been taken by using domain name sites online.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to Active-Domain. Type in the domain you want to check in the search box and press "Return." The site will take a few moments to load and show you domain names associated with the word you entered, including various suffixes, such as ".com" and ".net." You'll see either "Taken" or "Available" next to each.

Visit the GoDaddy website. Type the domain name you want in the text box at the top and select the suffix from the drop-down menu. The search results screen will show you the availability of all suffixes, even if you don't choose one.
