Do it Yourself: Canopy for a Bed

A canopy can turn a plain bed into something special. Curtain panels supported by a ring over the head or center of the bed drape down and soften the look of the whole room. This project requires only modest skills, no sewing and can be completed in a weekend by most do-it-yourselfers. Does this Spark an idea?

  • 10-inch embroidery hoop
  • 2 curtain panels, 44 inches wide
  • 1/2-inch wide ribbon, 48 inches

Instructions

      Remove the inner ring from the embroidery hoop and discard. Unscrew the outer ring so that it's open.

      Thread both curtain panels onto the embroidery hoop by slipping the open end into the top pocket of each. Bunch the fabric so that its gathered evenly, with each panel taking up half of the hoop. Refasten the hoop.

      Tie the ribbon ends to the hoop at the places where the two panel meet.

      Screw an S hook into the ceiling. You can center the hoop over the center of the bed, so the panels drape over the head and foot. You may also place it over the head of the bed with the panel draped on either side.

      Hook the ribbon through the S hook and arrange the panels as desired.
