DIY Baby Onesie T-Shirt Dress
You want to dress your baby girl in something more stylish than the typical one-piece pajamas or bodysuit, but you don't want to deal with all the fuss of a multiple-piece outfit. Dress your baby in something more fashionable than a simple onesie or one-piece sleeper while keeping things simple for easy access during diaper changes with a homemade onesie dress. With a single piece of fabric and a few stitches, you can transform an inexpensive onesie into a girly outfit that looks more complicated than it really is.

1
Lay the onesie flat on your work surface. Measure across the front of the onesie right at the armpit. Multiply that measurement by 3 to get the length of fabric you will cut. Measure down from the point where you just measured across to 2 inches below the bottom of the onesie. Add an inch to this measurement to determine the width measurement for the fabric. Cut your piece of fabric according to these measurements.
-
2
Fold the piece of fabric in half widthwise, right sides of the fabric together. Sew the ends together with a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
-
-
3
Fold the bottom edge of the fabric 1/4 inch toward the wrong side of the fabric --- at this point, the bottom edge is whichever edge you decide to fold; the other edge will become the top edge. Iron this fold before folding the edge another 1/4 inch in the same direction. Iron the second fold. Sew the folded edge with an 1/8-inch seam allowance to complete the hem.
-
4
Loosen the tension and lengthen the stitch on your sewing machine. Sew a basting stitch around the top edge of the fabric with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Leave the thread tails from this stitch long.
-
5
Pull the bobbin threads of the basting stitch to gather the top edge until the top edge of the fabric is as wide at the onesie when you lay the fabric flat. Adjust the gathers around the fabric so they are even and not bunched in places along the top edge.
-
6
Unsnap the crotch of the onesie. Slide the fabric skirt you made over the top of the onesie so that it is upside down, with the top edge resting under the armpits. Line the side seam of the skirt up with one of the side seams of the onesie. Pin the skirt in place on the onesie with straight pins. The pins should go through only one layer of skirt and onesie so you can still hold the onesie open as if you were going to slide it over a child's head, otherwise you will sew the onesie closed.
-
7
Sew around the upside-down top edge of the skirt with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Remove the straight pins as you sew.
-
8
Flip the skirt of the dress down to complete the onesie T-shirt dress.
