How to Install Camshaft Bearings

Like other parts on your automobile, the camshaft bearings will wear down over time. When that happens, it is best to go ahead and change them.You should change the bearings as an entire set or you will have to take things apart to do it again. A person with no auto mechanics experience can complete this project in a couple of hours. You can do the job in your driveway. This article covers engines with overhead cams.

      Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Label each of the spark plug wires according to their proper locations using a marker and masking tape. Grasp the boot of each wire and pull it away from the spark plug. Do not pull by the wire itself or you will damage it. Remove the spark plugs using a socket ratchet and extension.

      Remove the PCV valve by pulling it off. Label and disconnect the vacuum hoses using a marker and masking tape. Remove the valve cover, then remove the valve cover gasket carefully if you plan to reuse it again. Loosen the bolts on the camshaft bearings using a socket and ratchet. Start from the center and work your way out.

      Coat the new bearing caps with engine oil. Place them on the camshaft in the proper position. Loosely install the bearing cap bolts. Tighten them in an X-pattern using a torque wrench. Tighten the bolts in several steps, with the final step tightening them to 87-105 inch-pounds.

      Install the valve cover gasket. Install the valve cover and tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet. Connect the vacuum lines according to the labels you made when disconnecting them. Install the PCV valve. Install the spark plugs using a socket, ratchet and extension. Do not over-tighten them or you will damage the threads.

      Install the spark plug wires by pushing the boots onto the plugs until you feel them snap into place. Connect the negative battery cable and tighten the terminal nut with a wrench.

Tips & Warnings

  • When replacing the bearing caps only, it is not necessary to drain the coiling system or disconnect the distributor.

  • It is important that you disconnect the battery as instructed or you could short out engine accessories or even be shocked.
