How to Do Your Hair in a '40s Hairstyle

How to Do Your Hair in a '40s Hairstyle thumbnail
An elegant 1940s updo.

Unlike food and clothes, which were rationed during the Second World War, women's hairstyles were plentiful during the 1940s. From a simple updo to sultry peekaboo bangs, many of them are still popular today. Although some of the styles look complicated, they can be re-created fairly easily with a little effort and a few basic hair supplies. Think of Rita Hayworth, Bette Davis and modern-day celebrity Dita Von Teese for inspiration. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. 1940s Updo

    • 1

Brush your hair back and gather it into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck. Tie it with a hair elastic. Divide the ponytail into two equal sections.

    • 2

Place the comb in one section of hair, halfway down its length, and comb it back toward the elastic. Twist the section under and secure it with bobby pins. Repeat with the other section.

    • 3

Smooth down stray hairs and spray them in place for a sleek finish.

    1940s Peekaboo Bangs

    • 4

Wash hair and dry it until it is only slightly damp. Part it far over on one side to create a peekaboo effect over one eye.

    • 5

Curl small sections of hair with a 1-inch curling iron. Start at the top of your head and work downward. Open up the curling iron and let the curl slide off the barrel rather than unwinding it.

    • 6

Pin each curl in place with a bobby pin. Let your hair cool down for a few minutes. Remove the bobby pins.

    • 7

Loosen the curls with your fingers.

    1940s Top Reverse Roll

    • 8

Set your hair in rollers, rolling hair away from the face.

    • 9

Remove the rollers. Part your hair on each side of your head from front to back, then make a third part across the back of the head. Brush the rectangular section (the hair between the three parts at the top of your head) forward and pin both sides of it to hold it.

    • 10

Roll the pinned section loosely toward the back of your head, with the ends remaining inside the roll. Pin it in place crosswise with bobby pins.

    1940s PIn Curls

    • 11

Wash your hair and let it dry until damp. Comb your hair and divide it into small sections.

    • 12

Wind each small section around your finger and pin the curl in place with a bobby pin.

    • 13

Tie a silk scarf around your hair and sleep on your pin curls overnight. Remove the pins in the morning and gently run your fingers through your hair to create sexy curls.
