How to Put a Ringback Tone on Your Phone

Ringtones are small audio files that are played back when your phone rings or when you receive a text message. Almost all smartphones (and most non-smartphones) support custom ringtones in some capacity. The supported ringtone format varies from phone to phone, and is likely to include MP3 and WAV audio formats. Using any number of free ringtone downloading and ringtone uploading websites, you can easily find a ringtone (if you don't have one already) and transfer it to your cell phone.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which file types are compatible with your cell phone. This information is usually listed in the documentation, on the phone operating system itself and on the manufacturer's website.

    • 2

Select the ringtone you want to transfer. There are numerous websites that offer a wide variety of free ringtones (see Resources). Some sites offer direct downloads while others may require you to create a free account or complete a survey to access the ringtone. Once you have the ringtone you want to transfer, go to a ringtone/file uploader website (see Resources).

    • 3

Enter the requested information. Most ringtone-upload websites request your carrier (e.g., T-Mobile or AT&T), cellphone number (1 + the area code), a name for the ringtone and the file itself.

    • 4

Click the "Upload/Send File" button. Depending on which site you use, the ringtone will be sent to your phone in a text with a download link or a text with the ringtone as an attachment.
