Instructions

    • 1

Head out to local garage sales or thrift stores to find a cheap coffee table, which will be covered with pages from the old magazines.

    • 2

Sand any finish off of your table by hand with medium-level sandpaper. If there's a dark paint on the table, use thicker sandpaper and sand this as well. Sand outdoors or in a well-ventilated area and wear a filtering face mask to prevent wood dust inhalation.

    • 3

Select a paint color for the base color of your coffee table. Paint your coffee table in the color of your choice, let paint dry for two hours and paint on one more coat. Allow both layers of paint to dry for four hours.

    • 4

Select and cut out photos from magazines that you like for your tabletop. Make sure to cut out enough photos to completely cover the top of your coffee table. Arrange the photos into a desirable pattern.

    • 5

Begin applying the photos with your decoupage adhesive onto the table top. Working in small sections, apply glue with a paint or sponge brush, lay the photo over it and press it down, then apply a layer of glue over the photo to seal it.

    • 6

Allow glue to dry for two hours once you've covered the entire tabletop, then spray a layer of clear shellac sealant over your table top and allow it to dry for two hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can apply these steps to other décor pieces for your home, too. For example, decoupage ceramic vases, photo frames, book covers, lamp bases or even curtain and bed boards.
