How to Rebuild a Briggs Engine

Briggs & Stratton engines are used on all sorts of small lawn and garden equipment like lawn mowers, tillers and snowblowers. When you need to rebuild your Brigs & Stratton engine, make sure you read your owner's manual first as there are many different kinds of engine designs that Briggs & Stratton uses. Also, the part will vary and the owner's manual will tell you what the correct parts are to use.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Spark plug
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Oil filter
  • Unscrew the engine cover with a Phillips screwdriver. Once inside here, you can unbolt the engine pieces with an adjustable wrench. Depending on the engine, the amount of screws and bolts will vary.

  • Replace the engine gasket, the piece that seals the engine so no leaks happen.

  • Add a new spark plug. The spark plug will be located on the outer edge of the engine under a black hose. You can pop it out with your hands and place a new one in its place.

  • Clean the air filter. It will be located under a black rectangle. Unscrew the rectangular box with a Phillips screwdriver. Pop the filter out with your hands. Clean it with some soap and water. Place it back into the slot and reattach the rectangular box.

  • Add a new oil filter. Look for a large soda can like canister. This is the oil filter. Unscrew the filter with an oil filter wrench. Once it is unscrewed, pull the old oil filter out and place a new one into position. Tighten it with the oil filter wrench.

  • Rescrew the engine bolts together., then reattach the engine cover.
