How to Replace Mower Deck Blades on Model # 917273770

The Craftsman 917.273770 is a lawn tractor designed for residential use. The mower has a 22-horsepower motor, an electric-start ignition and a six-speed transaxle. To cut grass, the mower has a single blade, located below the mower deck. After regular usage, the blade will begin to wear. Eventually you'll need to either replace it with a new blade or sharpen it. Replacing the blade is a relatively simple task that a competent do-it-yourselfer can accomplish without taking the tractor in for service. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Park the mower on a flat, solid surface. Turn off the mower, remove the key from the ignition and place it in your pocket. Engage the parking brake and place bricks or wheel chocks behind and in front of at least one wheel to prevent the mower from moving.

    • 2

Place the jack under the frame of the mower and raise the mower off the ground so the center of the blade is accessible. For proper usage of the jack, follow the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 3

Place a rag over the blade and hold the blade still over the rag. Loosen the blade bolt in the center of the blade using an adjustable wrench, then remove the blade bolt, lock washer, flat washer and blade.

    • 4

Insert the new blade onto the blade pin with the trailing edge of the blade up.

    • 5

Install the flat washer, lock washer and the blade washer over the blade. Secure the entire assembly with the blade nut.

    • 6

Lower the mower following the jack manufacturer's instructions.
