How to Accept an Auto Insurance Claim

How to Accept an Auto Insurance Claim thumbnail
Auto insurance claim settlements should cover all damages.

Considerations for vehicle damages and medical treatments must be met by an insurance claim settlement. Lost work time, future medical treatments and vehicle rental during the time of repair are often neglected by adjusters reporting auto insurance claims. In several cases, provisions are not met for all expenses encountered when insurers send a claim settlement check.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of all the expenses incurred from the accident. Consult with the auto insurance claims adjuster to compare your list of expenses with those being reported to the insurer.

    • 2

Send your vehicle to a trusted repair shop after the adjuster inspects it. Ask your mechanic to inform you of any necessary repairs that are not on the adjuster's report. Call the adjuster, or have your mechanic call your adjuster, to review the extra repairs noted by the shop.

    • 3

Review the itemized settlement to see what the claim check sent by the insurer is designated to cover. Request an itemized breakdown of the settlement if one was not sent.

    • 4

Send the claim settlement check back to the insurer if it does not cover all of your expenses. Include a detailed letter listing the costs you incurred and the amount you expect to receive.

    • 5

Accept the insurance claim settlement once the check you receive includes an amount that will cover the costs of damages and medical care. Cashing the check is typically all it takes to accept the settlement. Once you accept the settlement, the case is legally considered to be closed and settled.
