How to Fix An Overhead Garage Door Lock Catch

Most manual lift residential garage doors have a center key lock. On the inside of the garage door, there are two bars connecting to the lock. At each end of the garage door, there are catches that guide the ends of the lock bar into the holes in the door track. When the door is difficult to lock, it is time to fix the overhead garage door lock catch. The lock catch is a simple piece of angle steel connecting to the door. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Stand on the inside of the garage and close the garage door. Twist the door lock handle as you would when engaging the lock. Look at the lock bars where they slide through the catch and into the track. The catch is either too high and the lock bar is hitting above the track hole or too low and hitting below the hole.

    • 2

Use a 3/8-inch wrench to loosen the two hex head screws securing the catch to the garage door. You only need to loosen the screws enough to move the catch.

    • 3

Raise or lower the catch as necessary to align the end of the lock bar with the hole in the track. Tighten the screws to secure the catch.

    • 4

Repeat on the other side of the door. Once you make the adjustments, attempt to lock the door again. Continue making adjustments to the catch as necessary until the lock bars engage the hole in the track.
