Do it Yourself Garage Floor Coating
Sealing a concrete garage floor with an epoxy garage floor coating is important because it protects the floor from damage caused by grease, oil and gasoline. It also provides a smoother finish if you happen to find yourself laying on the floor working underneath cars a lot. Unfortunately, coating a floor is not as easy as simply rolling on epoxy paint. Things You'll Need
- Broom or leaf blower
- Wire scrub brush
- Mineral spirits
- Acid etching or concrete cleaner
- Hose water
- Epoxy paint
- Paintbrush
- Paint roller

Remove all of the items from the garage including removable cabinetry. Sweep out all of the debris from the garage. You can also use a leaf blower to blow debris out of the garage if you like.

Scrub the floor with a wire scrub brush and mineral sprits to remove all grease and oil from the ground. It is common to have a large build up on the floor, especially where you car sits.

Apply acid etch with a mop to the floor to remove any excess dirt and oil.

Hose off the cleaners and acid etch and allow the floor to completely dry before moving on. Allowing 24-hours to dry is a good idea.

Fill in any cracks or voids in the concrete with concrete patching and allow adequate drying time.

Mix two-part epoxy paint or use a one-part epoxy concrete flooring paint. Trim the edges of the floor with a paintbrush and then roll it onto the floor with a paint roller. If necessary, apply a second coat. Allow time to dry before placing anything back into the garage.

Tips & Warnings
Do not attempt to seal a garage floor that was previously sealed, is excessively damp or newly poured. Wait at least 1-month from the pour date before sealing the floor. You can test for moisture by taping a 2-by-2-foot square piece of plastic to the floor for 24-hours. If the floor looks wet under the plastic, the floor has too much moisture to seal. Wait until you have lower humidity levels in the garage before sealing.
