How to Clean Vertical Fabric Blinds

Vertical fabric blinds generally have several long, fabric-covered vinyl slats called vanes. The vanes connect to a common chain at the top of the vertical blind unit, and they all retract, turn and expand simultaneously. Most vertical fabric blinds have a dust- and dirt-resistant coating installed during the manufacturing process, but light cleaning is often necessary. Stains, dirt and dust can accumulate and must be cleaned immediately to avoid damaging the appearance of vertical fabric blinds. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Routine Cleaning

    • 1

Extend the vertical fabric blinds across the length of the window. Turn the adjustment wand fully in either direction so the blinds close.

    • 2

Attach a hose lengthener and a dust attachment to a vacuum cleaner. Plug in and turn on the vacuum cleaner.

    • 3

Place the suction side of the dust attachment on the top of the first vane. Slide the dust attachment down the vane in a slow, steady movement. Continue sliding the attachment down until you reach the bottom of the vane.

    • 4

Place the suction side of the dust attachment on the top of the second vane. Clean it using the same process you used for the first vane, and continue vacuuming in this manner until each vane is clean.

    • 5

Turn the adjustment wand in the opposite direction until it stops moving. The blinds will open, then close again with the opposite side facing you. Place the suction side of the dust attachment on the top of the first vane and begin cleaning. Use the same method you used to clean the first side.

    Stain Removal

    • 6

Wet a clean rag with warm, moderately soapy water.

    • 7

Scrub the stain with the rag using firm, circular motions.

    • 8

Rinse the rag in cool water. If the stain is still present, scrub it out using more warm, soapy water.

    • 9

Pat the cleaned area dry with a clean towel. Removing excess water prevents vertical fabric blinds from warping or becoming damaged.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the dust attachment on large sections comprised of multiple vanes to save time. For example, vacuum the top half of the blinds all at once and finish by vacuuming the bottom half all at once. This will remove most, but not all, the dust and dirt on your vertical fabric blinds.

  • Before attempting to spot-remove stains, dust and vacuum your vertical blinds. Failure to do so can cause further staining when dust and dirt becomes wet.
