How to Make a Metropolitan 2 Scooter Go Faster

by Justin Wash

The Honda Metropolitan 2 is one of the most popular 49cc scooters on the market. Not equipped with the most powerful of engines to start with, the immediately street-legal scooters are also limited via restrictor plates. Removing these plates will boost performance and speed.

Step 1

Open the seat of the scooter and remove the plastic lining to reveal the carburetor and throttle body.

Step 2

Locate the output of the carburetor where it connects to the cylinder head. Remove the bolts that hold the carburetor in place.

Step 3

Move the carburetor away from the cylinder intake and remove the restrictor plate that fits between the two parts. You may need to pry the plate away from one surface or the other, especially if the scooter is ridden often at full throttle.

Step 4

Replace the carburetor and the bolts that connect it to the cylinder intake.

Step 5

Test-ride your scooter. Check that uphill and flat-ground performance are not decreased at full throttle. The scooter should now hold top speed with less throttle and accelerate faster on flat ground.
