How to Detail Scale Car Motors

How to Detail Scale Car Motors thumbnail
Detailing model car engines requires extraordinary patience.

To properly detail scale-model car engines, you first need to have access to photographs of the full-scale engine compartment from which to work. With pictures, it is possible to accurately recreate all the necessary components of the engine, including the hoses and wiring, paint colors, and even the proper location of decals.

Things You'll Need

  • Model glue
  • 1000-grit sandpaper
  • Selection of fine-grit metal files
  • Reference photograph of full-size engine compartment
  • Small drill bits
  • Modeling stand with alligator clips
  • Fine-tip paintbrushes
  • Model paint
  • Pliable red wire of various diameter
  • Pliable black wire of various diameter

Instructions

    • 1

Glue the two halves of the model engine together, then clamp the engine block onto the model stand to dry.

    • 2

Use the sandpaper and metal files to smooth the visible lines where the two engine halves intersect after the glue has completely dried. Paint the engine block according to the reference photograph, then paint the remaining engine parts while they are on the model stand.

    • 3

Glue the remaining engine parts to the engine block, then install the engine onto the base or chassis of the model. Use the reference photograph along with the fine-bristle brush to paint the fine details onto the engine. Use dark brown paint, for example, to simulate grease, such as you might find on an engine block.

    • 4

Use the drill bit to drive small holes into the engine block where the spark plug wires will be routed, then use the red wire to simulate the spark plug wires themselves. Route the wires from the holes just drilled to the points of the distributor cap, then glue them into place. Final detailing will be accomplished when the model car has been built.

    • 5

Use the reference photo to identify the hoses and wires that are not molded in plastic on the model engine. These may include the battery cables, alternator wires and brake lines, as well as the fuel line routed to the model's carburetor located beneath the air cleaner. After the rest of the model car has been completed, route these lines with the black wire, using the reference photograph as a guide.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be patient and your final results will be better. Rushing the project will only decrease your chances of adding details that look real.
