Deadbolt Removal

Deadbolts are commonly used on outside-entry doors due to the increased security they provide. Standard door locks that are included on most outside-entry door knobs are easily picked and provide little security compared with doors that have deadbolts installed. Once installed on a door, deadbolts can be removed completely or removed and replaced as long as you have access to the inside of the door. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door completely so you can access the thin side of the door (the part that goes up against the door jamb and can't be seen when the door is shut) and the door jamb.

    • 2

Take a Philips-head screwdriver, remove any screw covers, unscrew the screws on the inside of the door holding the deadbolt assembly in place, and then unscrew the screws on the strike plate in the door jamb. If you can't find the screws on the deadbolt assembly, turn the deadbolt key in the lock all the way inside to reveal the screws.

Pull the deadbolt assembly on the door apart and then remove it and the strike plate. Your door is now ready for a new deadbolt if you plan on installing one.
