How to Bypass a Camaro Fuel Pump Relay

by Kyle Sanstrom

The fuel pump relay in a Chevrolet Camaro provides power to the fuel pump. The powertrain control module, or PCM, controls the fuel pump relay. When the PCM decides to turn the fuel pump on, it energizes the fuel pump relay and the relay's internal circuitry closes and completes the electrical circuit. When the relay fails, the fuel pump won't operate. A small length of copper wire can bypass the fuel pump relay inside the relay fuse block in order to operate the fuel pump for testing purposes.

Step 1

Park the vehicle on a flat surface and open the hood.

Step 2

Locate the under-hood relay center. It is on the right side of the engine compartment, behind the driver's side headlamp. It is a black plastic box and it contains all of the relays for the vehicle.

Step 3

Remove the cover from the under-hood relay center. Read the diagram on top of the cover which shows the location of the fuel pump relay inside the relay center. Remove the 4-pin fuel pump relay from the relay center.

Step 4

Take a 5-inch length of small-diameter copper wire and strip approximately 1/2 inch of the insulation from each end with a wire stripper.

Step 5

Look at the 4-pin receptacle where the fuel pump relay plugs into the relay center. Insert one end of the copper wire into the upper-left pin slot. Insert the other end of the wire into the lower-right pin slot. If both ends of the wire are properly seated, the fuel pump will turn on.
