How to Remove Wheel Studs & Dampers on a Yamaha XS 400

Knowing how to perform general maintenance on your motorcycle is a valuable a skill that is going to save you hundreds in the long run. It is especially helpful when on the road and you don't have time to wait for a service technician to install new equipment, including the wheels studs on a Yamaha XS 400. Unlike four wheel vehicles where the wheel stud is firmly attached to the vehicle, the wheel studs are actually part of the wheel itself, so removing the studs is the same as disconnecting a wheel from your motorcycle.

Things You'll Need

• Bike lift
• Torque wrench

Instructions

1. Raise the motorcycle onto a bike lift. Because you are taking the wheels off this is extremely important.

2. Disconnect the brake line running to the wheels. The line is connected to each wheel via single bolt. Remove the bolt with your torque wrench.

3. Remove the bolts holding each wheel onto the axle of the bike.

4. Slide out the wheel studs and the tire from the Yamaha XS 400. Perform the same task on both wheels.
