How to Install Cove Crown Molding

The molding has flat places on the top and bottom that fit flush with the wall and ceiling where you can nail the trim down. It is not necessary to cope the end pieces of cove molding to have them fit neatly together. A simple miter cut to 45 degrees will work fine. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the end of the cove molding with a 45-degree mitered cut. This will allow trim running on the perpendicular wall to fit against it to form a corner. Use an adjustable circular saw that will cut 45-degree angles. Turn the trim over to make the cut, having the blade go down and into the trim.

    • 2

Cut the other end of the trim with a miter cut as well. If you are fitting more pieces along a long wall, then you want the ends that meet to fit together at an angle. This way if the trim ever pulls apart, the space won't be as noticeable. Make the cut on the back of the trim and slice down and away from the trim. For the trim that butts up against it, cut an opposite angle so the will fit together.

    • 3

Hold the cove molding to the wall and nail it with finishing nails. Tack it on the flat edge where the trim meets the ceiling and wall. Continue cutting and nailing up trim until you get near the end of the wall.

    • 4

Make a 45-degree angle cut to fit the last piece of trim on the wall up to the one before it. Measure from the last piece of trim to the corner.

    • 5

Measure the last piece of trim starting at the point where it meets up with the previous piece and down the length of it. Make a mark to note where the end of the mitered cut should be.

    • 6

Cut the last piece of trim on the wall starting at the mark. Cut from the back of the molding and saw down and in toward the trim. Nail the last piece in place. Repeat with the other walls.
