How to Measure a Filing Cabinet Lock
A filing cabinet lock works by dropping a rod into place that secures the drawers to the side of the cabinet. If the lock becomes frozen or stops working, you need to replace. If the lock freezes and you cannot open any drawers, you may need the help of a professional locksmith. Otherwise, you can remove the lock and measure it for a replacement. Does this Spark an idea?

Pull open on the top drawer. Lift up and pull out to completely remove it from the cabinet.

Insert the key into the lock and turn it to the open position.

Place a tap onto the back of the lock. Hit the tap lightly with a hammer to remove the lock from the filing cabinet.

Measure the dimensions of the lock with a cloth tape measure. You need the length and cylinder circumference of the lock.

When purchasing a replacement lock, take the old one with you for comparison.
For some replacement locks, you can purchase one that is thinner and user filler to make the hole size fit the lock.
