Creating a mold from a carving allows you to create replicas of the object out of new materials. Whether you're making the mold to create objects for a hobby such as model making or using the mold to make distinctively shaped candy, silicone-based materials provide an option well suited to beginners. You can find different brands of silicone mold supplies at some craft shops or from online retailers. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Clean the carving to remove any debris or dirt. Wipe it off with a lint-free cloth, as even a tiny speck of dust could cause a flaw in the mold.
-
2
Mix the two parts of the mold compound together. Take equal parts of the two materials into your hands and knead them together. Both materials have a consistency similar to modeling clay and create the complete compound when combined. Continue to knead the two together until blended completely. You have a 10-minute window to apply the material to the carving before it sets.

3
Create a thin layer of silicone compound over the carving. Spread the material over the surface making sure to get it into all the crevices of the carving.
-
4
Cover the carving with a second layer immediately after applying the first one. Completely cover the carving with a layer of the silicone compound that's approximately ¼ inch thick.
-
5
Allow the material to cure for approximately one hour. Remove your carving from the newly created mold by gently pulling it free.
