VW Thing Convertible Top Installation Instructions

While it's great to be able to lower the convertible top of your Volkswagen Thing for driving in sunshine and raise it when it's raining, constantly opening and closing the top can cause its thin material to become worn and damaged over time. Installing a new convertible top on your VW Thing is a somewhat tricky process, but one which you can complete in an afternoon. You can order a replacement top from your local auto parts store.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws that connect the rear retaining strip of the convertible top of the interior body of the vehicle. Remove the tension cables from the strip and top bow by hand.

    • 2

Carefully pull away the weatherstripping and other trim located on the top bow of the convertible top. Pull the front bow away from the frame. Take care not to damage the bow or the frame while doing this.

    • 3

Position the new convertible top on the vehicle. Place a small amount of contact cement on the top bow, along either side. Allow 20 minutes for the cement to set.

    • 4

Reattach the trim and weatherstripping. Reattach the front and rear bows with screws and a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 5

Use contact cement to attach the rear section of the convertible top to the vehicle in the same way you attached the front section to the front bow. Reattach the tension cables to the top bow. Tighten the cables by hand to secure them in place. Open and close the convertible top a couple of times to make sure it works correctly.
