How to Take Out a Ceiling Light & Put in Hanging Lights

A hanging light can provide an ambiance in a room that a ceiling light cannot. To replace the ceiling light with the hanging light, swap the two using the existing wiring that is already in the ceiling. A few household tools are all that is needed. Does this Spark an idea?

      Go to the fuse box and trip the circuit breaker that supplies the room where the ceiling light is located with electricity. Place a ladder beneath the ceiling light. Unscrew the metal screws in the ceiling light with a Phillips screwdriver.

      Pull the ceiling light off the ceiling plate. Pull the wires attached to the ceiling light out of the hole in the ceiling. Twist off the screw-connector tabs from each pair of wires that are now exposed. Place the screw-connector tabs in your pocket. Unwind the twisted wires from each other. Place the ceiling light aside.

      Unscrew the screws that are in the ceiling plate with the Phillips screwdriver. Pull the ceiling plate off the ceiling and put it aside.

      Unscrew the set screws surrounding the dome on the hanging light -- use your fingers. Pull the dome out from inside the collar at the front of the hanging light. Screw a bulb into the socket inside the light. Replace the dome and screw the set screws back in.

      Attach the exposed ends of the wires coming out of the base of the hanging light to the wires coming out of the hole in the following manner: the black wire from the hanging light to the black wire from the hole; the white wire from the hanging light to the white wire from the hole; the copper-colored or dull-colored wire from the hanging light to the same-colored wire from the hole. Screw a screw-connector tab on each pair of wires until resistance is felt.

      Place the base of the hanging light over the hole. Screw wood screws through the base and into the ceiling using a Phillips screwdriver. Restore the electric power to the room.
