How to Replace an Automotive Dimmer Switch

An automotive dimmer switch allows you to turn the instrument cluster lights up or down. It's most effective for night driving. Dimmer switches vary between vehicles, but they are usually mounted on the left side of the dash, next to the headlight switch. In many vehicles, the dimmer switch is integrated with the headlight switch or fog light switch, meaning you'll replace the entire multiunit when you replace the dimmer switch.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off your vehicle's engine and open the hood. Locate the battery and remove the plastic battery cover, if necessary. Loosen the nut behind the black battery cable and pull it away from the battery. Wait 15 minutes to allow the power reserve to discharge. This ensures the vehicle's airbag is deactivated. When replacing most dimmer switches, you'll be working near the steering column or airbag.

    • 2

Inspect the dimmer switch. Remove any visible bolts or screws. In most cases, they'll be behind the panel surrounding the switch. However, you can skip removing the panel if the mounting screws or bolts are visible.

    • 3

Remove the panel surrounding the dimmer switch. Use a trim stick or automotive pry tool to pry around the panel's edges, and then pull it off. If there isn't a panel around the dimmer switch, the entire front dash panel likely has to come off. Start prying on the driver's-side edge of the dash panel and work your way to the passenger side. Remove the panel to access the dimmer switch's screws or bolts.

    • 4

Remove the dimmer switch's screws or bolts, and then pull it out of its mount. Find two or three connections on the back of the switch, depending on whether it's a multifunction switch or not. Unplug any connections to separate the dimmer switch.

    • 5

Plug the new dimmer switch into the connection, and then set it in the dimmer switch mount. Tighten the screws or bolts to secure the dimmer switch.

    • 6

Push the dimmer switch panel back into place. Typical automotive panels are held in place by small rivets. You can reattach them by pushing firmly. If removing the front dash panel was necessary, position it against the dash and push one section at a time until the panel is secure. Reconnect the black battery cable.
