Having someone to keep you on task is a good way to prevent procrastination.

A science fair is a school event where students demonstrate a scientific experiment. Students may use visual aids, research papers or the actual experiment when demonstrating. Because these projects take so much work, it's easy for students to procrastinate. Procrastination can cause a lot of problems. Your project may not be complete, or the stress of finishing it at the last minute could cause you to feel overwhelmed. Stop procrastinating by arming yourself with some useful tips.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask yourself why you are procrastinating. You have probably never stopped to think about it. Is science not your best subject? Do you dread the length of time and amount of work needed for the project? If you can pinpoint exactly why you are procrastinating, you will be able to find a way to overcome it.

Remind yourself that there is no reason to avoid the project, because that will only cause you more stress later on. Be logical about the time frame your teacher has given you. Putting off the project will only make it more difficult for you when it is due. Plus, you have to plan on life being unpredictable. You never know what could be going on in your life by the time you decide to work on your project. You might be sick, have a special date or have chores to do that just can't wait.

    • 3

Get motivated by promising yourself a treat after the project is complete. Pick a treat that you are really willing to work for. Maybe that special skateboard you've been wanting forever, or a pizza party and arcade night with your friends. Be sure to check with your parents after you choose your treat.

Divide the project steps into sections. Work on only one section at a time and complete that section before moving to a new section. This allows you to focus on one part of the project instead of worrying about the whole thing. Thinking about the entire project can easily lead to dread, which then leads to procrastination. Examples of sections include choosing the topic, research, gathering materials, conducting the experiment, observing and recording the experiment, and presenting your science project.

Find someone who will help you stay on track. Ask parents, teachers, siblings or friends to help keep you from procrastinating. All they have to do is periodically ask you how your project is coming along. The more people you have ask you, the more likely you will stay on track.
