How to Replace the Coil Pack on a '99 Lincoln Navigator

The 1999 Lincoln Navigator comes standard with a 300-horsepower, 5.4-liter V-8 engine. This engine uses a distributor-less ignition and eight individual coil packs that sit on top of each spark plug. This provides a very efficient spark to each cylinder, as there is no loss in spark intensity from spark plug wires. While this system is more efficient, it is not perfect and does fail on occasion. When this happens though, it is necessary to replace only the coil(s) that failed.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Lincoln's hood and locate the coil packs; they are on top of the engine, directly above the valve cover gaskets. There are four on the left and right side of the engine, making a total of eight coil packs. Unplug the wiring harness plugging into the failed coil pack by pressing the locking button and pulling the harness from the coil pack.

    • 2

Loosen and remove the nut securing the coil pack to the engine with a ratchet and socket. Pull the coil pack straight up and off the engine, exposing the spark plug beneath it.

    • 3

Place a small amount of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot of the new replacement coil.

    • 4

Place the replacement coil over the exposed spark plug, lining up the rubber boot with the top of the spark plug. Press the coil pack downward until it clicks into place on the plug.

    • 5

Tighten the one coil pack bolt to 40 to 62 inch-pounds with a torque wrench and socket. Plug the wiring harness into the receptacle on the new coil pack.

    • 6

      Close the Navigator's hood.
