How to Compare Kindle 2 Against Filament

The Kindle 2 is an electronic book reading device developed and released by Amazon. The Filament is also an electronic book reader, but one made by a different company. Though both of these devices are fundamentally the same in that they allow you to read digital books, there are a wide variety of things that separate them including available features and their overall business model.

Compare the pricing structure. The Amazon Kindle 2, as of February 2011, retails for between $139 and $189 depending on which model you purchase. The Filament is technically free on its own, but it requires a $19.95 monthly subscription to the Filament book club. The Kindle requires no such additional fee outside of the cost of the actual eBooks you purchase.

Look at the content availability on each device. According to the Amazon Kindle website, over 810,000 electronic books that are compatible with the Kindle are available for purchase on Amazon's website. Through the Filament's partnership with Fictionwise (owned by Barnes and Noble), only 500,000 electronic books are available for that particular eBook reader.

Examine the specifics of the controls of each device. The Kindle 2 features a built-in control pad that requires you to press buttons in order to turn book pages, highlight and other things of that nature. The Filament has similar controls but also has a touch screen, allowing you to make notations in any electronic book with a stylus. The Filament also allows you to insert blank pages into any electronic book on the device.
