How to Design a Toroidal Transformer

How to Design a Toroidal Transformer thumbnail
A toroidal transformer has each wire wrapped around a ring-shaped core.

A toroidal transformer is a transformer whose electric wire windings are wrapped around a doughnut-shaped core. Toroidal transformers operate at high efficiency, and can be used in any circuit that requires a transformer. A toroidal transformer differs in form factor as opposed to conventionally constructed transformers. Because the windings are wrapped around a doughnut-shaped core rather than a rectangular or E-shaped core, a toroidal transformer is more difficult to construct than most transformers.

Things You'll Need

  • Insulated electrical wire (red)
  • Insulated electrical wire (white)
  • Iron or ferrite transformer core or iron ring
  • Electrical pliers

Instructions

    • 1

Use the electrical pliers to cut a 24-inch length of red wire. Strip off half an inch of insulation from the ends of the wire segment.

    • 2

Cut a 12-inch length of white wire. Strip half an inch of insulation from the ends of this wire segment.

    • 3

Coil the red wire around the transformer core or iron ring. Leave two inches of slack at each wire end.

    • 4

Coil the yellow wire around the transformer core or iron ring. Leave two inches of slack at each wire end.

    • 5

To use this toroidal transformer as a step-up transformer, connect one of the yellow wire ends to the first terminal on the AC power supply. Connect the other yellow wire end to the second terminal on the AC power supply. Connect one of the red wire ends to the first terminal on the AC output device. Connect the remaining red wire end to the second terminal on the AC output device.
