Central AC Fan Blower Won't Stay Off on Auto Off

Try different methods for making your fan blower stay off.

Central air conditioning makes homes feel cool and comfortable in the summer. The central air conditioner's thermostat controls when the air-conditioning blower comes on or goes off. The thermostat controls have several settings. The settings are manual on, manual off and auto off. If the central air conditioner stays on when it is set on auto off, try using different settings. If the blower stays on after trying the different settings, replace the thermostat. Broken thermostats make air-conditioner blowers stay on or off without responding to the controls. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Using Different Settings

    • 1

Turn the fan control switch on the thermostat to the "Off" position by sliding the tab to the left. This turns the central AC unit completely off. The heat, air conditioning or blower never operates in this position.

    • 2

Turn the fan control switch on the thermostat to the "On" position by sliding the tab to the right. The fan blower comes on, and blows continuously. If the temperature switch is set on heat, the heat turns on, and heats the house until it reaches the temperature set on the thermostat. When the house temperature reaches the set temperature, the heat turns off, but the fan blower continues blowing. If the temperature switch is set on AC, it works until it reaches the correct temperature. If the switch is set on "Off," nothing operates except the blower.

    • 3

Turn the fan control switch on the thermostat to the "Auto Fan" or "Auto Off" position by sliding the tab all the way to the right. The fan blower operates until the house reaches the desired temperature, and turns off automatically.

    Replacing the Thermostat

    • 4

Turn off the circuit breaker controlling the power running to the thermostat. Lift the cover off the thermostat. Label each wire with a piece of masking tape.

    • 5

Remove the screws from the thermostat, and pull the thermostat off the wall. Remove it slowly because the wires fall inside the wall easily.

    • 6

Hold the new thermostat up to the wall, and mark the openings for the screws with a pencil. Drill the holes for the screws.

    • 7

Push the wires through the hole in the back of the thermostat. Attach the wires to the new thermostat according to the instruction manual.

    • 8

Screw the thermostat to the wall, and put the cover on the thermostat. Turn the power back on, and test the thermostat.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the blower doesn't turn off after you've tried all thermostat settings or replaced the thermostat, call a heating or air-conditioning repair company. Let a professional repairman check for other problems.

  • Make sure you turn off the power to the thermostat if you change the thermostat.
