DIY IR Extender

With an IR extender you can change the channels of a TV upstairs if you are downstairs.

Set up an infrared remote control to transmit signals through walls and floors using an IR extender. You can control devices such as your DVD player, stereo receiver, satellite or cable. If you forget to turn your TV off in another room, use the IR remote control to turn it off without having to get up, as long as you are within 100 feet. It is easy to set up an IR extender in your home, and you can have it set up in only a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

• IR receiver
• IR extender
• Remote control

Instructions

1. Set up the receiver so that it is within 20 feet of the audio/video device you want to control, facing the device's IR sensor. Connect the AC adapter to the back of the receiver and a power outlet. Extend the antenna.

2. Set up the transmitter. Position the transmitter within 100 feet of the receiver; it can be through walls. Set it up so it is within 20 feet of where you will be using the remote control. Connect the AC adapter to the back of the transmitter and into a power outlet.

3. Point the remote at the transmitter and make sure it works. Try to change the channel, for instance. If it doesn't work, check all connections and make sure you are within range.
