How to Secure Ceiling Fans for Earthquakes

A ceiling fan can sustain severe damage during an earthquake.

If you live in an area that gets a lot of earthquakes or even where an earthquake might ever be possible, then you need to take the time to prepare yourself and your family to deal with this natural disaster. However, as you prepare for the earthquake, you should also take the time to secure various areas of your home to prevent unnecessary damage. For example, you can secure the ceiling fans in your home before an earthquake.

Instructions

1. Replace the cable that's holding your ceiling fan in place if it's old or worn. The cable you use should be strong enough to support the weight of your ceiling fan model.

2. Lower the ceiling fan using the new cable. During the earthquake, the ceiling fan should be able to sway in all directions without being damaged.

3. Secure the cable to the ceiling joist, which is the frame within the ceiling that's used to support it. Use heavy duty bolts and replace those that are old or worn.
