How to Install a Chip in an ECU
Installing a performance chip in a car's ECU's is a popular way to increase its performance. A performance chip recalibrates the fuel, air and timing settings for more power and also usually raises the rev-limiter, allowing the engine to rev higher. While most new and recent production cars are "reflashed" by a computer for more performance, older models from the '80's and '90s use a computer chip that is removed and replaced.
Things You'll Need
- Socket set and ratchet
- Phillips screwdriver
- Flat head screwdriver
- Clean towel

1
Determine where the ECU box is located. This will vary depending on the model. On some cars such as BMWs, the ECU is located inside the dash, behind the glove compartment. On other models the ECU is located in the engine bay, mounted just in front of the firewall. Review the directions for the chip or a workshop manual for detailed directions.
-
2
Disconnect the battery cable that goes to the negative terminal on the battery. This should be done anytime you are working on a car's electronics to avoid a short, which can cause damage.
-
-
3
Unbolt the ECU from its location with a socket and a ratchet or a wrench. The ECU will have a series of small bolts holding it to some type of bracket. You may be able to simply unbolt the ECU box from its location, or you may need to unbolt the bracket as well.
-
4
Disconnect the wiring harness and any other wires that go to the ECU. This will be a large wiring harness and connector and may be held on with a metal clip that needs to be flipped up to remove the harness.
-
5
Transport the ECU to a clean work area and lay it down on towel or clean rags. Remove the lid or cover for the ECU. This will be a series of bolts or screws that are removed with a screwdriver.
-
6
Withdraw the circuit board from the ECU container and set it down on the towel. The board may be a hinged design that needs to be unclipped and flipped open to reveal the board itself.
-
7
Locate the chip. Most chips are small rectangular or square designs. Review the directions or a manual to ensure you are removing the correct chip. Carefully pry the chip out off of the board with a flat head screwdriver, working progressively on either side. Note the position of any notches or other marks for the chip's orientation.
-
8
Install the new performance chip by carefully pushing it into place, ensuring it goes straight in and in the same orientation as the old chip.
-
9
Reinstall the lid on the ECU box and tighten the screws or bolts. Reinstall the box back in the car and tighten the bolts. Plug the wiring harness back in. Reconnect the battery. On some vehicles you will need to turn the ignition key to the "On" position and leave it there for several minutes while the ECU reprograms itself.
