How to Overcome BIOS Size

Older basic input/output systems (BIOS) sometimes have a certain issue when it comes to detecting the sizes of hard disks with large capacities. This issue can often be resolved by upgrading the BIOS; this can be accomplished by downloading the appropriate package from the BIOS manufacturer's website and then installing it.

Instructions

    • 1

Download a DOS image from the Boot Disk website (see "Resources" below). Click the "Special Disk for BIOS Flashing" link to download the DOS image as a ZIP file. Right-click the ZIP file and select "Extract All." Double-click the extracted file named "DRDFLASH.IMG." Insert a disk into a connected floppy drive and click "Burn" to write the DOS image to the floppy disk. Remove the floppy disk after the burning process.

Download the update file from the motherboard manufacturer's website. You can find the name and model number of your motherboard in the motherboard user's manual. If prompted, agree to the motherboard manufacturer's license agreement and click "Download" to download the update file as a ZIP file. Right-click the ZIP file and click "Extract All." The ZIP file contains both an executable file and a data file; note both the file names because you will need them later. Insert another blank disk into your floppy drive. Right-click the files, point to "Send To" and then select "Drive A" to copy the files to the floppy disk. Remove the floppy disk and insert the bootable floppy disk that you created earlier.

    • 3

Restart the computer and boot it from the floppy disk. If your computer does not boot from the floppy disk automatically, press the "F2," "F10," "F11" or "Esc" key during startup and select the "Floppy" option to boot from the floppy drive. After you have booted from the floppy drive, remove the boot disk and insert the disk that contains the BIOS upgrade files.

    • 4

Type the name of the executable file on the floppy disk and press "Enter." Next, type the name of the BIOS data file and press "Enter."

    • 5

Press the appropriate key to confirm that you want to flash the BIOS. After flashing the BIOS, type "Exit" and then press "Enter" to reboot the computer.
