How to Make Concrete Block Steps
Concrete blocks may create a basic, durable set of stairs for an entryway. Whether to a deck or a door, concrete blocks can be placed to make a fairly inexpensive, short stairway. Any time one works with concrete blocks, they need to be aware of the weight of the blocks and the lifting involved. Contractors are available to complete the project, or it may be considered a do-it-yourself task for the more experienced builder or decorator. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the desired area for the base of the stairs. Consider the height of the concrete blocks, the needed number for the proper stair height and the width of each block when measuring.
-
2
Frame the decided area using 2-by-4 wood boards staked at each corner. This frame allows for the pouring of a concrete pad.
-
-
3
Mix quick-drying cement according to manufacturer's directions. Pour the mixture into the frame. Smooth with a trowel and allow to dry for 24 hours.
-
4
Place the first layer of concrete blocks on the poured foundation. Fill the open areas of the blocks with quick-drying concrete. Smooth a layer of the concrete over the top of the blocks using a trowel.
-
5
Add a second layer of blocks. Begin at least one full block space from the bottom layer to create the step. Repeat the concrete filling and smoothing process.
-
6
Repeat the process until the steps reach the desired height.

Tips & Warnings
Check the requirements in your area concerning the addition of rails to steps. Some areas have regulations for stairs over three steps high.
Ensure that the concrete platform is dry prior to setting the blocks. The blocks may sink unevenly if the base is not dry.
