Microfiber Sofa Cleaning

Known for their soft texture, variety of hues and durability, microfiber sofas are becoming increasingly prominent in homes. Microfiber upholstery consists of tiny, lightweight fiber strands tightly packed together to create vibrant colors and luxurious consistency. Although microfiber sofas are stain-resistant, they inevitably become soiled with dust, food debris or pet fur. Regularly cleaning microfiber sofas preserves their outward appeal and longevity. Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the entire sofa to extract dust mites, pet fur and debris particles, using a vacuum brush attachment.

    • 2

Locate the care label under the sofa or on a cushion. The letters indicate the types of cleaners acceptable for use on the sofa. For example, the letter "W" indicates water, "S" signifies solvent and "S-W" stands for solvent and water.

    • 3

Examine the sofa for stains. If stains are present, moisten a clean cloth with the appropriate solution. Use a dry-cleaning solvent if the letter "S" is printed on your couch's care label or a mild soap solution if "W" is printed on the care label. You can use either the solvent or soap solution if the label reads "S-W". Create the mild soap solution with 1 tsp. of colorless liquid detergent and 1 qt. of warm water.

    • 4

Blot the stained microfiber with the moistened rag until the solvent or soap solution fully permeates the upholstery. Dab the affected microfiber until the stain dissolves. Lightly dampen the microfiber -- do not saturate it.

    • 5

Remove the soap solution from the upholstery with a second cloth dampened with water. Dab the microfiber with the cloth. Do not rinse out the dry-cleaning solvent; it will evaporate on its own.

    • 6

      Let the microfiber fully air-dry.

    • 7

Glide a soft-bristled brush over the microfiber upholstery to restore its soft nap.

Tips & Warnings

  • High heat from steam cleaners causes microfiber upholstery to become warped.

  • Test the solvent or soap solution on an inconspicuous area first, such as underneath a cushion, to ensure the solution won't cause discoloration.
