How to Make a Deadbolt Lock Bump Key Proof
A person can use a special type of cut key to bump, or pick, a lock. This key is known as a bump key. When you insert a bump key into a lock, it pushes the pins inside the lock upward, allowing someone to unlock the door. Several companies, including Kwikset and Masterlock, manufacture bump-proof locks. If you want to make your lock bump-key proof, you must replace your lock with with a bump-proof deadbolt. Remove the latch of the deadbolt lock with a screwdriver. Pry off the latch with the tip of the screwdriver.

Remove the screws holding the bolt portion of the lock to the door, then remove any retaining screws. Pull the deadbolt out of the door.

Install the bump-key-proof deadbolt according to the instructions included with its packaging. The bump-proof deadbolt slides into the door; install it just like any other deadbolt.

Tips & Warnings
Both Kwikset and Masterlock warn that their bump-proof locks are not 100 percent bump-proof, but are substantially harder to pick or bump.
