Follow the steps on screen and select your USB drive as the backup location. Click "Back Up Now" and wait until the backup completes, which could take several hours.

    • 4

Disable any antivirus or security programs other than those from Microsoft that are installed on your computer. These could interfere with the installation of the service pack.

Plug in your computer's charging cable if you are using a laptop. If you are using a desktop PC, go to the next step. If the battery dies during installation, this can cause problems, such as data loss.

Click "Start," "Control Panel," "System and Security" and "Windows Update." Click "Check for Updates" on the left of the window.

    • 7

Click on the "Important Updates" option when your computer is finished searching for available updates. Make sure the check box to the left of "Service Pack for Microsoft Windows" is checked. Click "OK" and "Install Updates" on the right.

    • 8

Wait for the update to be downloaded and installed. The progress will be shown in the window. Click "Restart Now" once installation is complete.

    • 9

Re-enable any antivirus programs on your computer that you disabled earlier. Click "Start," right-click "Computer" and click "Properties." Verify that the installation was a success by looking for "Service Pack 1" under "Windows Edition."
