1
Confirm that you are eligible to receive a GED in Pennsylvania. You must be at least 18 years old and be a resident of Pennsylvania. In addition, you must not have graduated from high school or received a diploma already, and must not be enrolled in any secondary school. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you can take the GED, provided that you can also supply a letter from your school principal stating that you are withdrawn from school. You would also need to provide another letter, either from your employer, college, the armed services or a state institution indicating that you need to pass the GED for their purposes.

Contact the center you selected and register to take the test. You cannot take the test online; you can only take the test at a center.

4
Prepare for the test by taking a class or studying books or online materials. Pennsylvania has a number of free GED preparation classes throughout the state.

5
Take the test on the designated date and time. You will need to score at least 410 on each of the five sub-tests, with an overall score of at least 2250. If you do not pass, you can take each test up to three times per year.

Receive your diploma and transcript in the mail. The Pennsylvania Department of Education will issue a Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma once you pass the test. If you were 16 or 17 when you took the test, you will receive your transcript upon completing the test, but you will not receive your diploma until you turn 18.
