1
Create a barrier around the outer perimeter of the playground with rubber barrier material or small fencing. The barrier will reduce the amount of mulch lost during normal activity or washed away due to hard rain.
-
2
Spread mulch around the entire area in an even layer, making sure it is 14 to 16 inches thick. Pay special attention to the mulch layer around the base of the playground equipment to protect children from impact when they exit the swings, slides and other equipment.

3
Walk the entire area and check for any thin spots, adding mulch anywhere you notice less protection.
-
4
Rake the mulch at least once a week to limit compacting that may occur with activity. Remove any accumulated trash. Fill the area to sufficient levels at least once a year, or every six months for very active areas.
