How to Identify an SBC Engine
A common slang term used when referring to small-block Chevrolet engines, SBC is universally understood in automotive circles, just as BBC designates a big-block Chevrolet engine. Small-block Chevrolet engines normally consist of V-8s with displacement sizes between 256 and 400 cubic inches, with the exception of the 396 cubic-inch engine, which is considered a big block. Certain V-6 engines are also considered small blocks, including the 200, 229 and 262 cubic-inch V- 6s, which are derived from the 283 cubic-inch V-8.

1
Find the Chevrolet engine ID number. The ID number, or code, is located on a machined pad at the front of the engine block on the passenger's side. The seven-to-eight digit alphanumeric ID number is often obscured by the alternator, which may have to be shifted in order to view the number.
-
2
Decode the first section of the Chevrolet ID number. For example, if you're decoding Chevy ID number "V0225DF," the first letter designates the engine manufacturing plant, with "V" identifying Flint and "T" representing Tonawanda. The following four digits identify the month and day of manufacture, with "0225" designating February 25. The remaining letters are the suffix, which are necessary for positive identification of SBC engines.

3
Reference the engine ID code suffix. The letters at the end of the ID number give valuable engine information when referenced to a Chevrolet ID suffix code (see Resources). Certain suffix codes also identify the original horsepower rating.
