How to Repair Lime Plaster

Lime plaster, while somewhat messy to work with, can be repaired and restored to good condition. Instead of using many of the plaster repair mixes that are on the market, you can mix your own. Lime plaster in its most basic form consists of powdered lime, sand and water. Starting with a basic lime plaster mix will enable you to create a plaster mix that will blend with your traditional lime plaster walls. The already mixed repair mixes may or may not blend, and they also will not restore the wall or ceiling to its original condition. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 1 part lime with 2 1/2 parts sand in a mixing tray using a trowel.

    • 2

Form the lime and sand mixture into a cone shape in the mixing tray using the trowel.

    • 3

Push the handle of the trowel down into the center of the cone to create a hole in it. Fill the hole with water.

    • 4

Mix the sand and lime with the water. Continue to add water in small amounts until you achieve a batter-like consistency.

    • 5

Sand the damaged area of the wall with a drywall screen to prepare it for making the repair.

    • 6

Scoop up some of the plaster mixture onto the edge of a putty knife. Drag the putty knife over the damaged area of plaster along the wall or ceiling surface at a slight angle to fill it in. Leave a slightly raised section over the filled in area. Allow the plaster to dry for five to seven days.

    • 7

Sand the plaster surface in the area of the repair with a drywall screen until it is smooth and flush with the rest of the wall.

Tips & Warnings
