Instructions

    • 1

Measure the cement slab to total the number of patio stones or bricks you will need. Flat stones come in different sizes, so you'll need to give the total square footage to a stone merchant. If you're laying bricks, figure four bricks for every square foot.

    • 2

Mix one part detergent with four parts water and scrub the cement slab to remove all of the debris. Use a wire brush and power washer if necessary to dislodge dirt from crevices. If the slab has grease stains, use a cement stain remover and rinse well to wash off the solution.

    • 3

Stir four parts sand with one part cement powder in a wheelbarrow, and add enough water to make a batter-like consistency.

    • 4

Spread a layer of sand mortar 1/2-inch thick over enough of the slab to set four bricks. Use the trowel to apply 1/4 inch of mortar over the bottom of the bricks. Set the pavers or stones atop the mortar with 1/8 inch of space between every stone. Rest a level on the stones and adjust them when needed to make the surface flat.

    • 5

Make grout with one part cement, one part masonry sand and water for a stiff consistency. Pack the joints between the stones with grout and scrape the excess off with the trowel. Wipe spatters with a clean, moist rag.

    • 6

Spread plastic over the patio and allow the patio to set for a week.
