1
Get inspired by viewing other kitchen layouts. Look at portfolios of kitchen designers to help you get a better idea of your options. Working with a professional can help you create a more practical and aesthetically pleasing design.
-
2
Determine where to place windows and entrances. Keep in mind that appliances and cabinets need to fit around those elements. A window above the sink generally can provide beneficial light for the kitchen.

3
Add the sink. The sink is one of the focal points of your kitchen. It often fits among cabinets and should be near appliances for simple access.
-
4
Incorporate the appliances. Kitchen appliances include a refrigerator, dishwasher, traditional oven and microwave oven. A microwave oven often can be hung to free counter space. Leaving a few feet of counter space on both sides of the traditional oven, refrigerator and sink make meal preparation easier.
-
5
Leave space between the design elements. For example, leave space between doors, counters and appliances. Leaving a space of at least 3 inches not only looks better but makes cleaning easier.
-
6
Decide whether or not to include a table or center island. If you have a large kitchen, you may be able to incorporate those elements. A table is often in a separate area of the kitchen, and an island is right in the middle of the kitchen.
