Your new kitchen can be just what you dreamed.

Your new kitchen layout should be designed with you in mind. This is why it can be very helpful for you to be directly involved in setting up the new kitchen's layout and design. When you build a new home or remodel your home, you probably will work with several professionals, including a kitchen contractor and possibly a kitchen designer. Take advantage of these resources to help you set up your kitchen layout. Ultimately, though, the final design should be up to you. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Get inspired by viewing other kitchen layouts. Look at portfolios of kitchen designers to help you get a better idea of your options. Working with a professional can help you create a more practical and aesthetically pleasing design.

    • 2

Determine where to place windows and entrances. Keep in mind that appliances and cabinets need to fit around those elements. A window above the sink generally can provide beneficial light for the kitchen.

    • 3

Add the sink. The sink is one of the focal points of your kitchen. It often fits among cabinets and should be near appliances for simple access.

    • 4

Incorporate the appliances. Kitchen appliances include a refrigerator, dishwasher, traditional oven and microwave oven. A microwave oven often can be hung to free counter space. Leaving a few feet of counter space on both sides of the traditional oven, refrigerator and sink make meal preparation easier.

    • 5

Leave space between the design elements. For example, leave space between doors, counters and appliances. Leaving a space of at least 3 inches not only looks better but makes cleaning easier.

    • 6

Decide whether or not to include a table or center island. If you have a large kitchen, you may be able to incorporate those elements. A table is often in a separate area of the kitchen, and an island is right in the middle of the kitchen.
