How to Repair Water Pipes with Sleeves

Rubber sleeves can be used to temporarily repair pipe ruptures. A metal pipe repair clamp, which can be purchased at a plumbing supply or home improvement store, covers the metal sleeve. The pipe clamps are pre-formed, so remember the size of your pipe so you get the right-sized clamp. Turn off the water to the pipe before beginning this project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

File the damaged area with a metal file to make it smooth.

    • 2

Center a rubber sleeve over the damaged area so it is completely wrapped in the sleeve.

    • 3

Place one-half of the clamp on the backside of the pipe and sleeve. Place the second half of the clamp so the pipe and sleeve are between the clamp halves. Line the screw holes in the clamp halves up so two screws can be inserted. Place the clamp's screws into the screw holes. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver until the edges of the clamps fit tightly together.

    • 4

Turn the water supply back on and check for leaks. Turn the water supply off and retighten the clamp's screws if the pipe leaks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sleeve repairs are temporary. Have a professional replace the pipe as soon as possible.
