How to Troubleshoot the Clutch on a 1994 Chevy S10 4x4
The clutch on your 1994 Chevy S10 4x4 is disengaged by hydraulic pressure supplied to the clutch release cylinder by foot pressure on the clutch pedal. The hydraulic and mechanical parts of the clutch actuation system can be the source of your problems. Clutch chatter when the clutch is engaged could result from loose engine or transmission mounts. The other problems that may occur are the result of leaks or mechanical problems in the clutch itself, which is located in the transmission housing. Finding these additional problems requires removal of the transmission from your vehicle.

1
Remove the cap from the clutch fluid reservoir with your hand. The clutch fluid reservoir is located on the left fender near the brake fluid reservoir. The fluid should be within 1/2-inch of the top of the reservoir. If it is not, check the clutch release cylinder and its connections to the reservoir for leaks. If no leaks are found, add brake fluid. If the reservoir is dry or if you replace the clutch fluid line, you need to bleed the clutch release cylinder when you fill the reservoir.

2
Check the bushing at the top of the clutch pedal to see if it is loose or binding, and repair it if necessary. Start the engine and allow it to idle. Apply the parking brake, put the gearshift in neutral and take your foot off the clutch pedal. Push the clutch pedal down, wait several seconds and shift into reverse. If you hear a grinding noise, it's likely there is a problem in the clutch disc or pressure plate.

3
Raise the clutch pedal about 1/2-inch from the floorboard while the engine is still running. Shift from reverse to first gear several times while maintaining the clutch pedal position. Rough shifting indicates a component failure inside the clutch.

4
Turn off the engine. Raise the vehicle and place it on jack stands using a jack. Take a flashlight and look at the clutch release cylinder located on the side of the transmission. Have a helper press the clutch pedal all the way to the floorboard. See if the clutch release cylinder pushrod extends noticeably. If it does not, there is a problem with the clutch release cylinder and it must be replaced.
